Let’s talk about Cha Eun Gyul and why he is the most heartbreaking character in this show. First, he fell in love with Gu Jae Hee who he thought was a boy. We all know that South Korean society is not very accepting towards homosexuality, but he brushed that all aside because he wanted to be with Jae Hee. Then he went on to apologize to his parents because he felt like he would disappoint them because by then he really thought he was in love with a guy. Such courage. And then he confessed to him (which is actually a her) and had to wait for days before receiving a decent reply. I can only imagine how gut-wrenching that is - waiting for an approval or rejection whilst seeing the person you like falling in love with another person. But he never gave up and continued to pursue Jae Hee. He even saved her from an accident which caused his chances into getting to the National Team. You know, just casually jeopardizing your future for love. After which he founds out that Jae Hee is really a girl, and of course, he felt betrayed because why? Because he was willing to give up everything for Jae Hee the guy only to find out that all of his resolve is based on lies. Ensue confusion and mental breakdown. After which Jae Hee gets into trouble then he saves her. Saves her ass because he couldn’t afford to stay mad to a person he loves. This scene is so precious because this is where he knew that Jae Hee would never love him back the way he loves her. He was willing to let her go and for a moment decided not to hear rejection out of Jae Hee’s mouth. But Jae Hee stayed and that gave him hope, and his hope is crushed because Jae Hee had to say it. YET HE SMILED AT HER as if everything is all rainbows and butterflies but the truth is he’s hurting so much. If those things happened to me, I’d probably drown myself in the Han River. So yeah, you go Cha Eun Gyul.
